HEARTGARD Plus Chewables for Canines

HEARTGARD Plus for dogs is a beef-flavored soft chew administered once a month to protect your dog from the threat of potentially deadly heartworm disease, plus control against roundworms and hookworms. Dogs six months of age and older should be tested for heartworm disease prior to being put on a preventive program and tested annually thereafter.

Item Specifications:

HEARTGARD Plus is used to prevent heartworm disease, treat, and control roundworms and hookworms.

For Use:
Dogs (at least 6 weeks of age)

SM (Blue) for dogs up to 25 lb.
MD (Blue) for dogs 26-50 lb.
LG (Brown) for dogs 51-100 lb.

Active Ingredients:
Ivermectin, pyrantel

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. The following drugs can potentially interact with pyrantel pamoate: levamisole, organophosphates, diethylcarbamazine, and piperazine. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Certain dogs of the collie breed are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.

Side Effects:
There are very few side effects when the drug is given at the usual dose. Ivermectin may cause a shock like reaction in dogs. If this occurs, notify your veterinarian. Vomiting has been reported with pyrantel. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

HEARTGARD Plus should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian.

What do i give dogs over 100 pounds?
A shopper on Apr 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi. That is a question you would want to verify with a vet.
why do I need to get approve to order heartworm for my dog? please
A shopper on Dec 19, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Because it is a prescribed medication.
are these veternarian approved?
Elizabeth B on Mar 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would assume some vets do approve of this medication. It does need a prescription , so if your vet has written you one, then it would be approved for your pet.
why do you have two prices for 51-100lbs?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I do see we have three options for the 51-100 pounds. Right now the 1 count dose is $6.99, the 6 count dose is $23.95 and the 12 count dose is $76.72.
What's the best dewormer and preventative for both intestinal worms and heart worms?
Renee M on May 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,

Honestly it depends on the dog. Some breeds have sensitivities to ivermectin (Heartgard active ingredient), or may have a sensitivity to a different active ingredient. Heartgard covers roundworms and hookworms, but not tapeworms or whipworms. Interceptor plus, on the other hand, covers all 4 intestinal worms, with a different active ingredient.
My vet told me that the online pharmacies require me to have heart worm testing done on my dogs once per year. Is this true ? if I'm giving them the heartgard, then why would I need to have a test done. Ive had each dog tested once and they have been on preventative treatment ever since. if I'm required to have them tested every year, according to her, I'll just stop giving it to them. It doesn't make any sense to me to give it to them monthly AND still do testing every year. I have 4 dogs and Im looking to take care of them, but not waste money at the same time.
Jeanne on Apr 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Its not the online pharmacies that require testing, that is what is required from veterinarians to write you a new prescription. Most vets will write you a script good for the year and then require you to come back for an exam before another script is written. As far as reason, that is something you can bring up to your vet. The only thing we require from you to place any prescription order is a valid prescription that we can fill.
