Product Summary:

Herm Sprenger Black Finish Prong Dog Collar

The Herm Sprenger prong collar is one of the most recognizable and popular names in obedience training tools. A safe and effective alternative to choker collars, it puts even pressure around the neck, about every half inch, pinching the skin in a band. This collar does not apply direct pressure to the trachea, so you can train your dog with little or no tugging, jerking, or pulling. The addition of a center plate connector allows the middle link to be configured symmetrically, enabling the prongs to tighten in the same direction. Made of high quality German black stainless steel, the size of this collar can be adjusted by adding or removing the links individually.

Features:

  • Interlocking links, each link equipped with two blunt prongs
  • Slightly beveled prong tips
  • Easy to increase or decrease in size
  • Made of high quality black stainless steel
  • Additional links sold separately (Item 498686)
Item specifications:

Size:
23"L (3.2mm)

Sizing Instructions:
Collar should fit snugly just below the dog's ears. Measure the circumference of dog's neck and add 2".

Please note: Not recommended for light color dogs.

Beautifully crafted
If you are looking for a top notch prong (after consulting a dog trainer on proper use) this is the one for you. I started training my dog with the typical pet store silver prong. While it helped us both learn the correct technique, I wanted a black one. The silver looked so "uninviting" on a black dog.Herm Sprenger is obviously one of the top companies for prongs and training tools. It is easy to squeeze the prongs to get on and off (but not easy enough to come apart for my simple obedience use). I use a back up slip lead (black) with a small clip, as most trainers will suggest. The stainless steel is light but obviously a strong metal. My black dog is no longer "ostracized" by those who know nothing about correct prong use. He also wears his blue flat collar; that is what people see.

looks good, feels good
I ordered the black collar for my long haired GSD. It blends in with his fur very nicely. It has the good solid Herm Sprenger feel to it.

Good, but...
The black color is what I needed to "camouflage" the prong collar on my dark Italian Mastiff, and the collar works fine etc, BUT it is not up to the total rugged standard of the regular stainless steel Herm Sprenger prong I already had. The prongs etc are the same size, but the Martingale-style chain and "O" connector (that you attach your leash to) is significantly smaller and less thick. Everything still works fine and I use it regularly, but it's much harder for me to attach the leash initially because of the O-ring being that much smaller and my dog's neck is huge with that Mastiff sagging skin. I'd still recommend it though and it certainly wouldn't be an issue with small-medium-and many larger size dogs.

I have the Herm Sprenger black finish prong collar in the small 2.25mm and my dog has out grown it with extra links already added, being a small collar on a strong dog it has stretched a little, so decided on the black finished large in the 3.2mm for strength. Great quality these Herm Sprenger prong collars and good price here at Pet Supplies.

This is a great training collar for large and giant breed dogs. Be sure to consult a professional trainer before using this collar on your dog.
Amy P on Feb 28, 2017
Choose this because it blends in with dark fur so people don't see it as easily. People are quick to judge when they see it stand out on a dog.

Recommended by professional trainer. Excellent training tool. My Cane Corso responds quickly.

The color of the color makes it almost invisible on my dogs.
Brett S on Jul 21, 2016
Herm Sprenger is high quality, and the black color will blend nicely with my dog's black coat, making it inconspicuous.

quality of item suggested by our trainer as one on the best available on the market

We are training our dog and he works much better with this collar over the gentle leader, harness or martingale. Once he figures it out, he auto corrects himself. Safe when used properly and with respect.

Herm Sprenger Black Finish Prong Dog Collar why is it only recommended for dark dogs? Does the color bleed? I have a fawn colored dog.
Robert H on Mar 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Robert, I have a "blue" (gray in human terms) dog, so she is dark, BUT, I have been using this collar for a year and never have seen the color come off or even chip. I have a Mastiff too so it gets plenty of rugged use. They may recommend it for dark dogs only because it's not as noticeable seeing the collar on a dark dog. Some people frown on the use of a prong collar not realizing it is a useful tool for certain situations/dogs with an owner that has been trained in the proper way of using it. But perhaps this would be a reason you'd want it "camouflaged" in the dog. But to answer your question, no, the black color doesn't bleed.
Is this easy to put on and does it have snap, closure?
Jim S on Oct 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Very easy- the links interlock, which is how you put it on and take it off. This is a high quality collar, so the links glide nicely.
What size are the prongs ?
A shopper on Oct 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The wire diameter used to form the prongs is proportional to the length or size of the collar and should be matched to the size of the dog. You could in theory add links to a small collar so it would fit a 100+# dog but it could compromise the stretch and ultimate strength and integrity of the collar. I use large SS collars on our 75# labs and large would work for 100# I think, and I would say extra-large is for dogs bigger than that. But follow Sprenger's advice as I am sure they have done strength testing and field trials on all the collar sizes.
Does this collar have swivel "D" ring?
Carla on Sep 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. This collar has a swivel D ring. Very sturdy and very good quality.
what size is this collar?
A shopper on Mar 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi,
I purchased two of these. I would strongly recommend checking other prong collars that fasten via clip. This one you actually have to force the prong from the metal plate. Not only is this difficult but eventually you will reshape the prong.
My dog has a size 16 inch neck , she is part Doberman and drags me around what size would you recommend?
Linda on Dec 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Sizing Instructions:
Collar should fit snugly just below the dog's ears. Measure the circumference of dog's neck and add 2".

Please note that you should consult with a professional on the proper use of this collar prior to using it. Good luck!
no size medium?
A shopper on Feb 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Choose the size of prongs you prefer for the size of your pet, links can be added or removed for proper sizing
