Works well!
When using loose, litter type paper bedding the scatter guards do the job in keeping the mess in the cage. The only inconvenience is the pieces of bedding that get caught in the quarter to half inch of "dead space" between the lip of the pan and the base of the scatter guard, but the vacuum crevice tool gets that out.

This product is as described. it works great for the ferrets. It keeps everything in the pan. Only issue is moving it to clean under it. This is also a good thing because the ferrets can't move it either hahahaha.
Works, but few problems
Okay so I own the Critter Nation double unit cage, i bought one upper and one lower guard to help with the stuff on the floor. The guards came and some were curved, not sure if it was due to shipping or if its how they are. One of the clips that attaches to the pan broke off with not much effort, but i super glued it and works just fine. It is a pain to clean the cage with the guards is the only downside to having them, but they do keep litter off the floor.
Perfect!
I use this for my guinea pigs, that I would do anything for, and it is perfect for keeping the paper litter in the cage. It also is perfect for keeping the piggies in the cage. You can't close the cage once they are installed so it's great they can keep the doors open. A little tip, if you put a liner of newspaper under the litter you can roll it up like burrito when you clean it up.
Fantastic
Floor is now clean under the cages! But you sent us too many uppers vs lowers.
Not what i expected from picture
These scatter guards are metal pieces that clip onto the plastic trays. The picture makes it look like one solid piece. Now I have to pull the guards off to clean all the litter that gets trapped under and behind the guard.More work than just cleaning the floor.
Fits great, easy to use
My newest ferret decided she likes to scatter the litter, as well as use an upper corner where there is not a box, as a potty. I saw this scatter guard and thought I would give it a try. The product came and I put it together easily and quickly. The tray does need to be removed for installation, but it is quite easy, and requires no tools. A couple of the clips needed a little adjusting in order to fit properly, but it was not difficult to work it. All in all, I am quite happy with my purchase.
Overall just what I needed
Overall just what I needed to keep what's in my ferret cage in the ferret cage. Lol..could have had better packaging, them metal it's made of a bit thin so was warped a bit in delivery process. Esau enough to bend back in shape tho...
whoever thought of these is a genius
Metal - not plastic. Easy to assemble, easy to add to an existing cage. I have 2 of the 2 story cages then added a level to one for a cat kennel. Keeps the litter in side for easy clean up.
love it
i read a lot of bad reviews on this but i figured for the money i would try it and i love it i use it for my rats and it keeps the bedding in the cage not to hard to change the bedding with these on i would recomend these to anybody
Helps keep the raisins in the cage.
I personally prefer these add on guards over buying the Bass pans because it has an angle that I feel keeps them from getting on the outside of the guard. The type of metal they use is extremely flimsy where it connects to the pan and I've had a couple come off. The locking system on each side keep it together even though they are gone.
Highly reccommended twith the purchase of Critter Nation cage
I would recommend this with the purchase of a Critter Nation cage, FYI, make sure you purchase both the upper and lower for the double unit, they are sold separately. Without this you will have to clean up the bedding that falls out of the cage daily.
OK, but not great!
The idea behind the scatter guard is great, but the quality is lacking. The paint was chipping in many places right out of the box:-((
not what I expected
The way the pieces fit onto the tray is ridiculous and makes it difficult to take it on and off for cleaning. Plus they don't secure onto the tray very well, so bedding and whatnot gets caught in between. When I find something better I'll be trading this in.
great product but it has a small drawback
The scatter guards are great espically if your ferret or small pet isn't litter box trained yet. They go together pretty easy but the last side to go together is a little tough as they have slide clips to attach them together. The clip kinda scrathes the last one to fit in. The only draw backs I found are 1- They take a little space away from the inside of the cage. 2- The clips that wrap around the under side of the tray stick out so when the door closes, it does hit the clip and pushes on it. Otherwise, the quality is very good and they deffently comes in handy to block food, or other things from getting out of the cage. I got these for my ferret as he wasn't completely litter trained yet. I also found you don't have to use all four sides if you don't want to. I only have 2 sides up (the sides he was using as a litter box).
This product is not what I thought
The product comes where you pretty much have to fight it to get it to fit on the tray, took my boyfriend and I to do it in some places. The product does NOT sit flush with the tray do cleaning is not easy because you pretty much have to disassemble it to clean the cage. Probably the worst Rat Product buy I have made.
Doesn't help a lot
i bought this in hopes it would stop my bedding from falling out of the ferret nation cage i just purchased, the material of this was flimsy, not sturdy at all, and the bedding still comes out from underneath the scatter guard.. so it didn't "guard the scatter" at all! lol. Very disappointed. Was NOT worth the $19... just go buy plexy glass, it would probably do a better job..
In a word cheap
If I knew just how flimsy they were, I wouldn't have purchased them, but since no one else makes anything that does the job the choice was between this and nothing. So yeah it's better than nothing, but only just.
Not worth it.
The product is of cheap design. It is quite taller than what the picture led me to believe. While assembly was easy, it barely fits in the tray. The height even where the guard is cut lower for the ferrets entry and exit is a bit high and my fuzzies, and they are not overly fond of going over that height. Also if you have a litter box that locks on to the cage, the height of the guard may block some of these locks. All in all a bit of disappointment.
Lasts about a year
I bought the lower guards for my ferret cage last July, they don't fit perfectly but they do the job well enough. My complaint is that they only last about a year, and that's if you keep using them after the first signs of rust. I'm currently waiting until they're back in stock to get new ones because the coating has completely peeled off and they are COVERED in rust now. I also noticed they've gone up in price since last year, not sure why unless the quality has gone up as well.
So So...
I was so excited when these came in the mail. Mine were a bit bent, but was easy to remedy as long as you aren't heavy handed on them like a gorilla. I think the material is pretty good quality and they have to be flexible in order to fit properly (including the clips). I installed them all myself and never thought I would get close to breaking them. I love that they are angled so that any litter that is kicked up just slides right back into place.I have two issues with this product. One: The guards do not sit flush with the floor, so litter gets pushed under the guards and trapped until it builds up enough that it overflows onto the floor. Secondly, I like to take out my pans outside from time to time and give them a good scrubbing. The extra size that the guards add makes this job much more difficult than it should be. On the same token, I do not want to have to remove the clips each time I clean the pan as I am afraid the constant attaching/removing will cause the clips to break over time.If you are having litter troubles, try having plexi glass cut to fit the cage about 5" above the litter all the way around, and attach using bolts, wing nuts, and washers. This works MUCH better.
No Problem
I had no problem laying the pieces out and installing as directed according to the instructions. Only complaint, I need the top guard, and it is not available, and I wish it was made in the good ole USA...
could be better
Pros:the height is perfect for keeping litter and bedding inside the cage.it was easy to put together and snap onto the tray.Cons:the metal used to make the parts is super thin and easily broken/bent.the texture of the material just made my ferrets want to dig at it. overall: Great concept but poor materials make this guard not so great. mine even came to me bent even though it was shipped in a flat box and the box was undamaged. When I bent the corner back it almost snapped off. I do not foresee a long future for this in my ferrets cage. :(
Do not buy
Its made very cheap. The bedding/litter get stuck under the guards and the clips are very flimsy. It was not worth the money at all. I will probably take it off.
Could be a bit stronger, but otherwise great!
I ordered a bottom set so I could use bedding in my Critter Nation, and while they are pretty cheaply made, they're doing a good job of holding in bedding. They came slightly bent and some places had the powder coating scratched off (Midwest seems to have some quality control issues), but for the price, they're not bad.I would like them more if they weren't so flimsy, but they easily saved me the $60+ I would have spent on having custom metal pans made for my cage and powdercoated, so overalll I'm pleased.

I'm very confused. I ordered this thinking it came with the pan pictured and all that showed up were the guards. Is the pan not included?
BEST ANSWER: This item is just the scatter guard as mentioned in the title of the product. The pan is a separate item.

How many guards come in each order? For example, if I select a quantity of 1 for the upper tray, does that send 4 pieces to completely surround my upper tray or is a selection of 1 only going to supply one of the metal sides/guards?

BEST ANSWER: The scatter guard is a completely different tray that goes in the bottom of your cage. It has raised sides that are molded into the try that help keep litter in the cage and off your floor. A quantity of 1 would mean that you are ordering one complete scatter guard pan that is raised on all sides.

The upper guard is for all sides. Except by the ramp which is open a bit. I have the guards and they help but I still had to add something on the outside to keep the majority of the bedding in the cage. Without the guards though would be a real mess. Love the cage though. Solidly built.
If purchasing the upper tray guard you will receive 4 separate pierces (1 for each side) that interlock together and attach to the plastic pans that should have came with your Ferret/Critter Nation :)
comes with enough pieces to surround the tray you're ordering for, so I believe that is 4 pieces. The top layer is a little strange due to the opening to the first floor.
It will come with the whole set to do the whole top tray. It will be sized to go around the hole for the ladder. You will get all 4 pieces. Hope this helps
Yes you will get 4 pieces to surround the tray.
There are 4 sides to one guard.

Is this a whole tray to replace existing flat tray? Or is it just the side guard that works with existing tray?
BEST ANSWER: It's just the side guards that attach to existing trays. I thought they were not helpful bc poop and bedding would just get shoved underneath and find it's way out still. Then it made it harder to clean

Mine was extra side bumpers, but was too annoying to use for cleaning and stuff got up under
Hello, it’s just the sides that fit to the existing trays. Works great!
It does Not come with the tray, you get just the guards

How big is the opening on the first level? Also, is the bottom shelf w/wheels optional? I need to cut down on the height of the unit?

BEST ANSWER: Are you asking about the ferret nation cage or the scatter guard? The scatter guard is just a border that goes around the bottom pans to prevent spills. There is no opening. The borders just clip on. For the cage it is the same size as the top and the doors open the entire width of the cage. And you can leave the shelf and wheels off of you like. Just skip that portion of the instructions.

Opening is about 5"X 5" to allow space for the ramp down to the lower level. There is also a clamp that allows you to separate the lower level from the upper level by locking the ramp into place. The Bottom shelf with wheels is not optional, but you can opt to not install them or remove them later.
